Academic Paraphrasing Tool for Essays and Research Papers

This academic paraphrasing tool rewrites a passage in a formal scholarly register while it keeps your in-text citations, numbers, quotations and technical terms exactly as you wrote them. Paste up to 500 words, read the new version next to your original with every changed word highlighted, and keep only the sentences that still say what you mean.

What academic mode changes and what it leaves alone

Academic mode asks the model for precise vocabulary, an objective tone and clear logical links between your sentences. It also keeps hedging words such as may, suggests or appears to, because removing them would make a cautious claim sound certain. That matters in research writing, where the strength of a claim is part of its meaning.

Some things are protected before your text reaches the model. An in-text citation like (Smith, 2020) or a numbered marker like [4] is copied back unchanged, and so are direct quotations, numbers, dates, units, formulas, proper names and technical terms. If a protected item goes missing in the answer, the server rejects the answer and asks the second model instead of showing you a broken paragraph.

  • Changed: word choice, sentence order, linking phrases, passive and active voice.
  • Kept: citations, reference numbers, quotations, figures, dates, units, names and terminology.
  • Never added: new facts, examples, sources, opinions or conclusions that were not in your text.

Using it on a literature review, thesis chapter or research paper

A paraphrasing tool for research papers works best on short units. Paste one paragraph from your literature review, compare the result with your draft, then move to the next one. Working paragraph by paragraph keeps the argument of the chapter in your hands and makes it easy to see where the wording drifted.

When you paraphrase research written by someone else, the idea still belongs to that author. Keep the citation in the sentence, and add it if your notes did not have one yet. The APA citation generator and the citation generator for other styles can turn the DOI of that paper into a reference in a few seconds.

For a thesis, reword sections you wrote yourself when they repeat the same phrases, or when a supervisor asks for a more formal register. Read the output aloud before you keep it. A scholarly paraphrase should sound like you on a careful day, not like a different writer.

How to paraphrase a paragraph in academic mode

  1. Paste your paragraph into the box above, or press Try Sample to see how the panel works first.
  2. Leave the mode on Academic. The word counter shows how many of your 500 free words per request you are using.
  3. Complete the security check and press Paraphrase Now. The first time, you confirm that you are 18 or older.
  4. Switch to the before and after view, read each highlighted change, and copy the version you want to keep.

Free use covers 2,000 words a day per person, which resets at 00:00 UTC. If you rewrite longer chapters often, Premium allows 2,000 words per request and 20,000 words per day.

Academic integrity: what a paraphrase can and cannot do

A good paraphrase shows that you understood a source and can explain it in your own structure. It does not turn someone else's idea into yours. Universities treat a close paraphrase without a citation as plagiarism, so the citation stays even when every word has changed.

Rephrasa will not help hide where a text came from. Requests to get past AI detectors, plagiarism checkers or Turnitin are refused at no cost to your daily words, and we do not sell or provide access to Turnitin. If your institution has rules about AI writing assistants, follow them and keep a copy of your original draft.

Your text is sent once to the AI provider to be rewritten and is not stored by Rephrasa after the answer comes back. Read the details on the About page.

Academic, Simple or Formal: which mode fits your draft

Paraphrase modes compared
ModeBest forTypical change
AcademicEssays, theses, journal manuscriptsPrecise terms, objective tone, explicit links between claims
SimpleExplaining a dense source to yourself or to a general readerShorter sentences, everyday words
FormalEmails to a supervisor, cover letters for submissions, reportsPolite register, no contractions or slang

You can switch modes on the same text. A useful habit is to run a hard source through the simple paraphrasing tool first to check that you understood it, then write your own version and polish it here.

Frequently asked questions

Is this academic paraphrasing tool free?

Yes. Free use allows 500 words per request and 2,000 words per day, with all three modes. Premium raises the limits to 2,000 words per request and 20,000 words per day.

Will it change my citations or statistics?

No. In-text citations, reference numbers, quotations, numbers, dates and technical terms are protected and copied back exactly. An answer that loses one of them is rejected and retried with the second model.

Can I use it for my thesis or dissertation?

You can use it to reword sections you wrote yourself or to check your understanding of a source. Keep the citation for every idea that came from another author and follow your university rules on AI writing tools.

Does it make my text pass Turnitin or AI detectors?

No, and it is not built for that. Requests to get past AI detectors, plagiarism checkers or Turnitin are refused, and Rephrasa does not provide Turnitin access.

Which languages does academic mode support?

English and Indonesian. The tool detects the language of your text and answers in the same language.

Need more words per day?
